Jesus’ suffering
In Jewish
symbolism, one’s face always speaks of righteousness:
- Jesus face was bruised, spat on and darkened with beating so that our own face could shine unharmed.
- His backed was bruised with 39 lashes. Today we know of 39 categories of disease (look it up!).
- Jesus received a crown of thorns which was beaten into his skull. This is symbolic of the curse of the law.
- His hands and feet were pierced at the cross.
- Then, at the end, the Romans were going to break his legs so that he would loose his support and die quicker but he was already dead. This was to fulfill the prophecy of centuries past that not a single bone would be broken.
Jesus’ work on the cross
Matthew 27:50
And when
Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.
Jesus
shouted a victorious war cry in victory. Jesus did not succumb to his wombs. He
gave up his spirit freely when he knew the work was done. It was finished
meaning that:
(a) Sin was defeated;
(b) A new dispensation of grace began;
(c) God’s presence was among us as the
temple curtain ripped.
Jesus’
shout brought forth this completion. He took 6 hours to die – the number of man
because he did it for men.
Jesus’ heel
was bruised by the Devil because He was bruised on the cross for our sins but
He was bruised why kicking the Devil off his throne.
1 Peter
3:18-20
[18] For
Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring
you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. [19]
After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned
spirits--- [20] to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited
patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few
people, eight in all, were saved through water,
After the cross
Jude 1:6
[6] And the
angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper
dwelling---these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for
judgment on the great Day.
After death
Jesus descended into Hell and:
(a) Took the keys;
(b) Preached to the captives in Hades;
(c) Went to paradise – Sheol. (Abraham’s
bosom) – no suffering – pre-heaven.
Jesus told
the criminal “today you will be with me in paradise”. This was because he took
him and all these that were in Hades into paradise.
Matthew
27:52-53
The tombs
broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life.
[53] They came out of the tombs after Jesus' resurrection and went into the
holy city and appeared to many people.
We can say that maybe Jesus made
a stop on Earth with the captives before ascending.
[16] Jesus
said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!”
(which means “Teacher”). [17] Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not
yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, 'I am
ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.' ”
Jesus told
Mary for her not to touch him because he had not yet risen, meaning his blue
had not yet been put on God’s mercy seat in Heaven.
Shouting
Acts 1:9-11
[9] After
he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from
their sight. [10] They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going,
when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. [11] “Men of
Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same
Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way
you have seen him go into heaven.”
Jesus went
up with a shout and he will come back with a shout:
1
Thessalonians 4:16
[16] For
the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the
voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ
will rise first.
Psalm 47:5
God has
ascended amid shouts of joy, the Lord amid the sounding of trumpets.
Jesus
brought forth all completion phases with shouts.
